When Trying Harder Is Not Enough
5 Ways Young People Can Build a System That Works

“Try harder.” “Just focus.” “You need to be more organized.”
These reminders are usually well-intended. But effort alone may not make an unclear task easier to begin, help a learner sustain attention or show them how to restart after becoming overwhelmed.
A young person may genuinely want to complete a task but still be unable to see the first step. Another may start enthusiastically and lose momentum halfway through. Someone else may have a plan that does not account for their time, energy or environment.
What would make the next step clearer and more manageable for this learner?
At Bridgewell, support begins with understanding the learner—not with assigning a standard tool or routine. This is both a strengths-based and an evidence-informed starting point.
A strengths-based approach considers what a learner can already do, what interests and motivates them, which strategies already help and where support is still needed.
Evidence-informed practice does not mean simply following whatever a study recommends. The Education Endowment Foundation notes that research evidence can vary in reliability and should be examined for its strengths, relevance and limitations. UCL Institute of Education’s guidance on evidence-informed teaching similarly emphasizes assessing the quality of research and considering critically how findings relate to a particular learning context.
For BW, this means using research to inform—not replace—professional judgement and knowledge of the individual learner.
It does not mean giving every learner the same planner, checklist or productivity routine. It means selecting and adapting strategies to fit the learner and the demands of their daily life.
The Harvard Center on the Developing Child describes planning, focus, self-control, awareness and flexibility as core skills that young people need for school, work, relationships and everyday life. These skills are not simply present or absent; young people can continue developing them through practice and appropriate support.
Here are five practical ideas families and educators can try.
1. Understand the pattern before correcting the behavior
When a learner delays, avoids or leaves a task unfinished, it can be tempting to focus immediately on the behaviour.
But “not starting” can mean different things:
- The instructions are unclear.
- The task feels too large.
- The learner is worried about making a mistake.
- The necessary materials are not ready.
- The learner is distracted, tired or overwhelmed.
- The first step is not yet visible.
Understanding should also begin with strengths. What does the learner enjoy? What are they already good at? When have they handled a similar situation successfully? What conditions help them participate or follow through?
Stanford’s strengths-based perspective on neurodiversity presents differences in attention, memory and learning as part of natural human variation rather than viewing people only through difficulties or deficits. It recognizes that different learning profiles may include both strengths and challenges.
This perspective can inform inclusive practice without assuming that every learner has the same profile, needs or diagnosis.
A strengths-based approach does not ignore challenges or reduce expectations. It provides a fuller starting point for deciding what support may be appropriate.

2. Make the task visible and startable
“Finish your project” may sound like one instruction, but it can contain many hidden decisions.
For example, instead of:
- Study biology
- Open the biology notebook.
- Read pages 20–22.
- Highlight the key terms.
- Answer questions 1–5.

The task can be academic, creative or part of everyday life. What matters is that it is real and meaningful enough for the learner to practise the system in context.
Making the task visible means translating a broad instruction into actions the learner can recognize and begin. Cornell University’s guidance on breaking the cycle of procrastination recommends first identifying why a person is not beginning. When overwhelm is the barrier, Cornell suggests breaking a large assignment into smaller, more manageable chunks. When getting started is the difficulty, it suggests committing to a short period of work rather than focusing immediately on completing the whole task.
One practical prompt used in BW learning activities is:
Can the learner begin the first step within five minutes?
If not, the step may still be too large or unclear. This is a practical BW prompt—not a research finding or a rule that will suit every learner.
More broadly, the EEF’s guidance on metacognition and self-regulated learning recommends explicitly teaching, modelling and scaffolding how learners plan, monitor and evaluate their work.
At BW, a strategy is first made visible, modelled and practised with support. Prompts can then be reduced as the learner begins carrying more of the process independently.

3. Plan for real time and energy
A useful plan is not a list of everything a learner hopes to accomplish in an ideal day.
It considers:
- How much time is actually available
- Other school, family and personal commitments
- The learner’s energy at different times
- Which tasks require greater concentration
- What materials or support may be needed
- Where breaks or adjustments may be useful
Two learners may have the same assignment but need different plans. One may prefer a written checklist. Another may need a visual schedule. Someone else may benefit from talking through the steps before working independently.
The goal is not a perfect schedule. It is a plan that the learner can realistically attempt, monitor and adjust.

4. Design focus and notice momentum
Focus can be supported by changing the task, the environment or the way a learner works.
Depending on the learner and situation, possible supports might include:
- A timer or short focus period
- Music or reduced background noise
- Movement before beginning
- A clearer workspace
- A visual reminder of the next step
- A checklist
- Working beside another person
- A planned break
- Placing the phone out of reach
These are options, not universal solutions. Learners need opportunities to notice which supports are useful in different situations.
A simple momentum check may also help:
- Green: I am moving forward.
- Yellow: My focus is fading or I am slowing down.
- Red: I am stuck, overwhelmed or off task.
A yellow or red check is information—not proof of failure. It suggests that the learner may need to pause, identify the barrier and adjust the approach.
This reflects the planning, monitoring and evaluating cycle described in the EEF’s metacognition guidance. Cornell University’s metacognitive strategies guidance also highlights the value of helping learners recognize their thinking processes, notice what remains unclear and reflect on what they could do differently.

5. Build a reset into the system
Even a thoughtful plan can be interrupted. Energy changes. Instructions turn out to be unclear. Distractions happen. A task takes longer than expected.
A workable system should therefore include a way to restart.
Depending on what has happened, a learner might pause to name the barrier, take a short movement or breathing break, adjust the environment, ask for clarification or reduce the size of the next step.
The aim is not to excuse unfinished work. It is to help the learner respond more purposefully when the original approach is no longer working.
Planning, awareness and flexibility are among the core life skills identified in Harvard’s guidance for professionals working with young people. A reset gives learners an opportunity to practise these skills when circumstances change or an original plan no longer fits.
Over time, learners can begin assembling a personal operating system: a practical collection of tools, routines, reminders and strategies that may help them start, focus, adjust and follow through with increasing independence.

One question families can try today
The next time a young person appears unable to start, consider replacing:
“Why haven’t you done it yet?”
with:
“What is making this difficult to start, and what is the smallest visible step?”
This does not remove responsibility. It helps the learner identify the barrier and participate in deciding what to do next.
Trying harder may sometimes be necessary. At other times, a learner may first need a clearer task, a more realistic plan, an appropriate support or a way to reset.
The goal is not a perfect system. It is a learner who can notice what is happening, adjust the approach and move forward with growing confidence and independence.
